Relief Panel from The Great Palace

Relief Panel from The Great Palace

Clay and wood

60x43cm

Uncovered from the wreckage of the Lazarus Expedition, this is a section of a much larger relief depicting the residents of Tarogramma. Sketches from The Great Palace show it as having been installed above the main table in the dining hall. It was almost universally unpopular, viewed as a tone-deaf and patronising way to honour those who lived in relative poverty nearby.

The Panel may have been looted during the People’s Revolution, when the Great Palace was destroyed only two years after construction was completed.
